On 23 May Young Endeavour set sail on a six month circumnavigation of Australia - her first in eight years, and this week sailed into the northerly port of Darwin. She has already visited Brisbane, Bundaberg, Mackay, Airlie Beach, Townsville and Cairns, before sailing inside the Barrier Reef to the Tip of Cape York and then across the shallow Gulf of Carpentaria to Darwin.
The Open Day was popular with Darwin residents on Tuesday, while Lieutenant Commander Gavin Dawe, Commanding Officer Young Endeavour, and Mr Achim Drescher, Chairman of the Young Endeavour Youth Scheme Board hosted a reception on Wednesday, attended by Administrator of the Northern Territory, His Honour Mr Tom Pauling. A host of local identities and corporate and community leaders were also present to celebrate the ship's arrival in Darwin.
During the six month circumnavigation more than 700 young men and women will embark to participate in the youth development program - including many from north and west Australia who will sail in Young Endeavour while the ship is in their coastal waters.
Since 1988 the Young Endeavour Youth Scheme, in partnership with the Royal Australian Navy, has provided challenging training voyages for over 11,000 young Australians in Young Endeavour. These voyages provide a unique, challenging and inspirational experience that increases self awareness, develops teamwork and leadership skills and creates a strong sense of community responsibility.
The sail training ship will leave Darwin on 14th September for an eleven day voyage down the spectacular North West coast to Broome. After Broome, it will then visit Exmouth, Fremantle, Esperance, Adelaide and Williamstown on its way home.
