'The ship struck and stuck fast,' so notes James Cook, unceremoniously 'discovering' the Great Barrier Reef as HMB Endeavour struck what's now known as Endeavour Reef near Cairns. Running aground at high water, Cook quickly displayed the leadership qualities that saw him appointed to command HMB Endeavour on her ambitious voyage to the southern land at the age of 38. Sending out long boats to sound the depths while crew handed in flogging sails aloft and others manned the pumps, the incident almost brought the expedition to grief.
