Safety equipment salesmen have a standard throwaway line: 'If your life's worth $20 then buy a life jacket.' But, in reality, any lifejacket is better than none at all. A National Marine Safety Committee (NMSC) study some years ago found that people who survived a boating incident were more than twice as likely to have been wearing a personal flotation device (PFD) compared to those who died.
