One week into the New York Barcelona Transoceanic Record challenge and the next two days look set to bring the most testing sailing conditions of the passage so far with wind gusting to 40 knots, especially this afternoon and into Friday.
Big, confused seas will accompany the winds which will make the fast going become increasingly difficult. But by Saturday conditions should have improved.
In the brisk conditions of the last 24 hours, average speeds have remained high, with both Estrella Damm and W Hotels this morning averaging over 20 knots.
W Hotels has sustained their biggest loss of miles overnight, only 8.6 miles over the eight hour time window, which might be accounted to some downtime, but both boats covered over 160 miles during the night.
W Hotels is fighting back on the most recent position poll W Hotels' Pachi Rivero, To?o Piris and Peter Becker were around half a knot quicker than Pepe Ribes, Alex Pella and Stan Schreyer on the Estrella Damm.
