The first Hobie 16 Worlds was held in Hawaii in 1976 and the 19th event will be held in Weihai City, China, around 250km north of Qingdao. It is being billed as one of the top international events in China following the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2010 Shanghai World Expo. It is likely to be the largest single class catamaran series ever to be held with up to 400 sailors from nearly 30 countries participating in youth, women's, masters, grandmasters and open competition.
