The Royal Hamilton Yacht Club has announced that the club has been awarded the 2010 Canadian Optimist Dinghy Championships. The event that will run from August 22 to 28, 2010 will host more than 90 plus youth sailors and 60 volunteers who together will participate in a great week of great racing!

The International Optimist Dinghy

Designed in 1947 by Clarke Mills, Optimist sailboats are designed especially for children, with exceptional safety and stability built-in. The boats are simple to operate - just one sail, one line, and one centerboard. They are also simple to transport - just strap it to the roof of a car or stow it in the back of a van or SUV.

Sailed in over 100 countries by over 150,000 young people, it is the only dinghy approved by the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) exclusively for sailors under 16 years of age.

The Club previously held the Canadian Championships in 2004 that saw more than 90 young sailors from across Canada and the northern US competing on Hamilton Harbour for the prestigious title of Opti Canadian Champion. Canadian Olympic sailor, Marty Essig (Sydney 2000) began his sailing career in an Optimist at the RHYC and many other Canadian Olympic sailors started in the Optimist.

Event co-Chair, Chuck Sweet said he is delighted that the RHYC will be hosting the 2010 Championship. "We were awarded the Canadian Yachting Association 'Regatta of the Year' in 2004 for the Opti Canadians and I know that with the many volunteers from RHYC and other local clubs we'll put on a great event in 2010. Regatta organization is all about good volunteer help, they work hard for no pay other than the love of the sport, a free lunch and perhaps an event t-shirt" he said.
