The Clipper Race Committee, in accordance with the International Rules of Sailing, today announced that it is implanting a rule to shorten Race eight. The forecast for the next week shows extremely light and unreliable winds which could affect the fleet's planned transit through the Panama Canal. Prior to leaving San Francisco every team was briefed about this likelihood and a number of gates were placed within the Sailing Instructions which could be called in at any time by the Race Committee as alternative finish lines.
