Sail-World's European correspondent-at large, Ben Gladwell, filed this account after a tumultuous Rolex Middle Sea Race, which saw the first yacht to finish, ICAP Leopard miss the race record by 30 minutes. Gladwell (21) sailed in the race aboard a chartered 42fter, the race started slowly for them, but the breeze quickly built in strength on the way to the first turning point off Sicily:
The start line of the 2009 Rolex Middle Sea Race is situated within the small harbor at Valetta, which is surrounded on all sides by high terraces of buildings, with only a narrow gap in the sea wall from which to escape to the open sea.
