While according to the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) more people have been taken hostage by pirates in 2010 than in any other year on record, not a single cruising sailor who transited the through time worn route of the Gulf of Aden on their way to the Red Sea has been captured. This is in spite of advice by authorities like the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) and the navies that patrol the Gulf of Aden to stay away and choose an alternative route to the Mediterranean. This has resulted in some yachts taking the much longer route to the south
