With light conditions at the start, it quickly became obvious that the monohull record of 10 hours 24 min, set by Carrera, Joe Dockery's R/P 81 in 2005, was safe for 2010. The breeze eventually picked up through the night and allowed Rambler, George David's R/P 91 to complete the race in 12 hours 31 min; provisional results in IRC A have Privateer, a Cookson 50 leading the corrected time scoring sheet, followed by New-Brunswick's own Vela Veloce.
Bad Fish, a Melges 32, is currently on top of the PHRF B division, while many other yachts are still waiting to finish in Key West. Niagara Falls NY Tom Reese, on Flight Simulator, is leading on corrected time in Multihull A division, ahead of two faster multis.
Racers saw a variety of conditions following the relatively warm start yesterday afternoon; most yachts were gybing their way down the rhumbline with many sail changes to take advantage of the vagaries of the wind along the Florida coast. Things settled a bit after dark once the fleet turned the corner towards the Keys.
Rambler crossed the finish line a little after 1:30 AM in Key West, where the temperature was hovering around 12 C (54 F); I thought Florida was warm at t his time of year...
Complete results will be available later today.
